Berberine is a naturally occurring alkaloid that is found in the roots, stems, rhizomes, or bark of a variety of plants like prickly poppy, tree turmeric, goldenseal, yellowroot, barberry, Oregon grape, Chinese Goldthread, yerba mansa, and the amur cork tree. It has a long history, having been used in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine primarily to promote healthy gastrointestinal function. Berberine HCl may also serve as an effective antifungal and antibiotic. Berberine HCl may also promote healthy blood sugar levels, promote a healthy functioning cardiovascular system, and support mental health. Due to its bright yellow color, berberine is also used as a dye sometimes.
