Glycerol CAS 56-81-5

Glycerol is mildly acidic and reacts with basic hydroxides such as copper hydroxide to produce a bright blue copper glycerol (used to identify polyols). Glycerol reacts with nitric acid to form triglyceride, also known as nitroglycerin, which is a high explosive. Because glycerin has water absorption, it is often used as a hygroscopic and moisturizing agent in cosmetics, leather, tobacco, food and textiles. Glycerin also moistens the intestine and can be used for enema or suppository treatment of constipation. Glyceryl nitrate can dilate coronary arteries and can be used to treat angina pectoris. Nitroglycerin can be used as explosives and propellant. Glycerol reacts with diacid to get alkyd resin, which is widely used in paints and coatings.
