Hirudin is a naturally occurring peptide in the salivary glands of medicinal leeches (Hirudo medicinalis) that has a blood anticoagulant property. This is fundamental for the leeches’ alimentary habit of hematophagy, since it keeps the blood flowing after the initial phlebotomy performed by the worm on the host‘s skin.

Animal experiments and clinical studies have shown that hirudin can effectively anticoagulate, antithrombotic, and prevent further blood stasis caused by thrombin-catalyzed clotting factor activation and platelet response. In addition, it inhibits thrombin-induced proliferation of fibroblasts and thrombin stimulation of endothelial cells. Compared with heparin, it is not only used in a small amount, it does not cause bleeding, and it does not depend on endogenous cofactors.
